In this portfolio, working with the artist Henri-Gabriel Ibels and the writer Georges Montorgueil, Lautrec created an ode to the café-concert. Montorgueil’s essay argued that café-concerts are places for people from all walks of life to relax and communicate. Lautrec’s images capture a cross-section of people involved in the Parisian nightlife.
This print represents a portrait of Polin , a French cabaret singer ("comique troupier") and actor. Having become famous, he has sung at the Café des Ambassadeurs and then, for twenty years, at La Scala. His most successful songs were recorded initially on the cylinders of the time, many of which were reissued more recently on CDs.
