As I was walking down Paradise street

As I was walking down Paradise street is a beautiful serigraph made by the Swedish illustrator and reporter Adolf Reinhold Hallman in 1955. The state of preservation is very good, the cardboard has only slightly yellowed on the margins.

On the lower left, inside the image, the signatureHallmann”. At the bottom in pencil, the writing “Canthies As I was walking from Paradise street”. On the lower right corner, still in pencil, the indication of the print “45,5%”. On the lower left of the back, in blue ink, the writing “From/A.Hallman/43 Fifth Avenue/New York City 3/March 23 1955”.

The inscription that gives the title to the artwork refers to an ancient English song called Blow the man down in which this strophe appears. The characters, who are dancing at the harbor, are the protagonists of the song as well, and the sign at the center of the image with the writing “Black-eyed Susan” refers to the female character at the center with a blind fold on an eye.

This artwork is ironic and fun, a pleasant illustration of an ancient and traditional sailor song.
