The poster is in very good conditions, except for some folds in the upper edge of the board.
Arnold Böcklin was born on 16 October 1827 in Basel, the son of Christian Friedrich Böcklin, a well-known silk merchant native of Schaffhausen, and Ursula Lipp, a famous descendant of a family that included among its ancestors Johann Jacob Lippe and Hans Holbein the Younger.
The color of Böcklin, both because it is prepared by hand and because it attracts the eye with a «resultant painting sucking», is far from the immediacy of plein air in those times praised by the Impressionists and rather «penetrates psychology in a way, so to speak, more musical than visual and the timbric character recalls the art of primitives» (Volpi).
