Autograph Letter by Albert Calmette

Typewritten Letter signed in German, dated Paris le 30 November 1931 by the French physician Albert Calmette, creator of the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis.

In this letter, Calmette addresses Walter Zadek in Berlin, expressing his opinion on the works of the German physician and pharmaceutical manufacturer Günther Enderlein:Translation: «…the works of Prof. Enderlein, curator at the Zoological Museum of the Berlin University, are known to me. Since you do me the honour to ask my opinion about these works, I can only inform you that I fully agree with the opinion recently published by the outstanding scholar Prof F. Neufeld, director of the Robert Koch Institute in the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift (No. 47, 20 Nov. 31. p. 1931). Professor Enderlein certainly cannot claim any exact bacteriological knowledge. The technique of pure cultures is unknown to him, so that he falls prey to unbelievable errors, and it is impossible to attach any value to his conclusions concerning bacterial transformations or mutations. There is not a single bacteriologist in the whole world, except the one mentioned by Prof. Enderlein (whose competence has been sufficiently marked by Prof. Neufeld), who considers his views to be proven…».
