Michael Burgess - Pen & Ink Wash Drawing on 252gsm Watercolor Paper
Life Drawing in Pen and Ink. Standing Female - Life Drawing
This is an early work. There is slight warping of the paper, due to the wash medium, along with slight tinting of the paper. Overall, this peice is still in very good condition. The frame is in excellent shape. This work is part of series of drawings that I did in the 1970s, which earned me an award from the Canada Counceil for the Arts. As such, this drawing represents a small portion of a larger collection of drawings, which I comepeted during that period, in a variety of mediums.
Life Drawing: Standing Female Nude, Pen & Ink, with Wash on Watercolor Paper. (Early work)
Life Drawing is as primordial as art itself. Often it is more of an exercise as opposed to an intentional, finished work. The use of Pen and Ink, with a Brush Wash, leaves a permanent record of our journey, warts and all. Much less forgiving than charcoal or graphite. It is one of the most honest mediums an artist can utilize, along with Watercolor. This drawing is an example of a 20-minute study, from the model, expressed with as much freedom and spontaneity as I could generate. It's somewhat of a lesson in humility, without any veils. When practiced often enough, it becomes the foundation for more sustained work. There is something very satisfying about an unrestrained approach to Life Drawing. In this case, a short sketch.
