From one of the most important series of etchings by G.B. Piranesi,  ” Views of Rome drawn and etched by Giambattista Piranesi, Venetian Architect”   this beautiful Artist’s Proof (1758) on watermarked paper, with wide margins, representing the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina at the middle of XVIII century, with contrasts and sharp details.

The Plates, executed over the course of Piranesi's career, from the second half of the 1740s until his death, were printed and sold as individual sheets or in collections that gradually increased as his output progressed, and occasionally included other series of prints as well.

Background:

In 1740 Giovanni Battista Piranesi arrived in Rome for the first time and he was astonished by the Eternal City’s beauty. He served an apprenticeship before with the Valeriani’s workshop, and after with Giuseppe Vasi ’s one. The Sicilian engraver and vedutist teached him the etching technique, conveying his graphic art’s passion to the venetian old master.

Acquaforte, Bulino e Punta secca su carta vergata e filigranata. Firmata su lastra margine inferiore-sinistro: “ Piranesi Architetto fec.” . Titolo inciso su lastra margine inferiore al centro. Image Dim: cm 39 x 54, Dim: 51.5 x 75.3. Buone condizioni, con usuali pieghe mediali della carta e un piccolissimo strappo margine destro.

Da una delle più importanti serie di acqueforti di Piranesi, “ Vedute di Roma, disegnate e incise da GiamBattista Piranesi, architetto veneziano” , questa splendida Prova d’artista (1758) ben impressa su carta filigranata e vergata con giglio entro doppio cerchio. Foglio a pieni margini che mostra il Tempio di Antonino e Faustina in Campo vaccino con dettagli e bei contrasti.

Contesto storico:

Nel 1740 Piranesi arriva per la prima volta a Rome e rimane subito affascinato dai panorami della Città Eterna. Così inizia un apprendistato prima presso la bottega di Domenico e Giuseppe Valeriani, e poi uno dal vedutista siciliano, Giuseppe Vasi, che lo “iniziò” all’arte grafica, trasmettendogli la passione per le tecniche dell’incisione e dell’acquaforte.
