The artwork belongs to the famous series Los Desastres de la Guerra realized during the years of the Independence Spanish War and published for the first time in 1863, representing the horror and despair of war.

In this plate, Goya reproduces the pathetic protagonism of death, prevailing in thirty-four etchings of the series. A group of guerrilla corpses lies next to their weapons, sabers, and rifles. In the background, there is only a newly sketched building.
