Graham Sutherland (1903 – 1980) was an English painter, among the most significant exponents of the English avant-garde. He studied the engraving technique at the Goldsmiths’ College of Art. In 1931, he specialized in painting. His earlier style, inspired by English Expressionism, was influenced by other European artistic movements, such as Abstract Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. His artistic practice is a synthesis among these Expressionist experiences and his own fantasy: gloomy manifestations, formal contortions, linear expansions, landscape visions.
