A Continental Rococo-Style Three-Piece Commode Garniture
Set of 3 furniture pieces, realized in the late 19th century following a 18th century taste.
Comprising a central bombe commode and a pair of conforming smaller chests, each of serpentine outline and pronounced bombé form, veneered in richly figured walnut and mounted throughout with cast and chased gilt-bronze ornament.
The central commode fitted with four long drawers, flanked by projecting sides, the smaller cabinets each with three drawers, all with shaped fronts and original scrolling foliate handles. The façades and shoulders applied with elaborate rocaille mounts including pendant garlands, foliate sprays, and stylized masks, terminating in scrolling sabots.
Each surmounted by a shaped verde antico marble top with moulded edge, following the undulating contour of the case.
Raised on short cabriole legs with gilt-bronze mounts.
This garniture reflects the continued popularity of French Louis XV / Rococo models, reinterpreted in the late 19th to early 20th century. The exaggerated bombé shaping, extensive bronze mounts, and serpentine marble tops are characteristic of revival production intended for grand decorative interiors.
The overall condition is good, consistent with age and use, with very minor veneer cracks and lifting. Some oxidation to the gilt-bronze mounts.
