Edmé-Jean Pigal (1798 - 1873).
Painter and lithographer. He entered the studio of Gros in the 1820s and showed at the Salon from 1827 to 1870. His caricatures were published occasionally in 'La Silhouette', 'La Caricature' and 'Le Charivari' and satirize social types and lower and middle classes. A chronology of Pigal's works is difficult to establish; however, generally, the backgrounds tend to become fuller. Single sheets not published in the newspapers were usually hand-colored.
