Ukiyo-e Print

This  Ukiyo-e Print i s a coloured woodblock print on paper, realized by the Japnese old master,  Utagawa Toyokuni , best-known as  Toyokuni I  (1769-1825), active during the Meiji period.

Representing a Japanese geisha or a Kabuki theatre actress, this print with vivid colours, is in excellent condition, except for minor wear and some imperceptible aging signs. Unframed.

It is amusing to discover the names writtens in Japanese ideograms into the cartouches: on the left, the artist name,  Utagawa Toyokuni, or Toyokuni I;  on the right side the engraver's name,  Yokokawa Takejiro  goues by the name of  Horitake  ( Hori  means " to engrave ",  Take  is a nick name of  Takejiro ).

Utagawa Toyokuni  (Japanese: ????; 1769 -1825), also referred to Toyokuni I, to distinguish him from the members of his school who took over his art-name after his death. The talented and great old master of ukiyo-e, known in particular for his kabuki actor prints, Utagawa Toyokuni was  the second head of the renowned Utagawa school   of Japanese woodblock artists , and was the artist who really moved it to the position of great fame and power it occupied for the rest of the nineteenth century.
