Mario Mafai (1902-1965): Italian painter, initiator, in 1929, with Scipione and Antonietta Raphaël, of an artistic group that was called "Scuola di via Cavour". He was born to Eleonora De Blasis, originally from Città Sant'Angelo, and to an unknown father. The surname Mafai, completely invented, was the one that the midwife attributed to him when she registered it in the registry office; in 1935, since he had been recognized by his mother's then companion, Mario Volpe, his surname was postponed. He soon left regular school to attend, with Scipione, the Free School of the nude at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. His career and his poetics remained very close to Rome, both in themes and in studies and in frequentations: Mafai's training in those years was built above all in the Roman galleries and museums and in the Art History library of Palazzo Venezia .
