Medallion

Medallion  is an interesting decorative drawing in pen on paper realized by the important French painter and engraver Frédéric Auguste Laguillermie , founder of the Art Society of French Engravers in Paris. This drawing is designed for precious jewel with its base and was inspired by Benvenuto Cellini

Auguste is the son of Eugénie Hime and Frédéric-Guillaume Laguillermie (1805-1870), an important Parisian printmaker, engraver and cartographer. Very close to art and graphic techniques since his childhood in his father’s workshop, Auguste Laguillermie enters the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1861 and attends the workshops of Léopold Flameng, specializing in the engraving technique, and of William Bouguereau. He exhibits for the first time at the Salon in 1863 and wins the Grand Prix of Rome for engraving in 1866. In Rome, he dwells at the Villa Medici, where he has stayed for four years. At the end of 1869, he moves to Spain to study and copy the masters of Spanish painting, among which Velasquez. The artist obtains a medal at the Salon of 1877 and a medal of honor at the Salon of 1890. Apart from some original reproductions (paintings, drawings, engravings), he is mainly a copyist engraver, expert in the etching technique. In 1883, he is nominated Knight of the Legion of Honor and then promoted to Official in 1903. He also becomes professor of engraving at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he has many celebrated students. He receives the Silver Medal at the Universal Exposition of 1889.

The drawing takes on a special meaning for both the valid hatching and the quality of the work. This is an artwork realized by a famous and important representative of French academic art of the late 19 ^th century.
