The artwork belongs to one of the series of silk-screens that he made on the subject of fame. Andy Warhol began in the early 1960s with his many portraits of Marilyn Monroe. In 1973, Andy Warhol decided to dedicate one of his screenprints to the Chinese dictator: starting from an image taken from Mao's own famous Red Booklet, Warhol developed a series of colored screenprints. Despite the repetition, each work becomes an autonomous entity, thanks to the use of colors so different from each other that alter the character's face and expression, charging it each time with a different emotionality.

Warhol's intent was to criticize, acting the opposite, the lack of creativity that seemed to emerge from the Chinese society of the time. Using the face of the Chinese leader in this way, Warhol takes away its semantic value and reduces it to a simple decoration.
