Once arrived in Rome,  Giulio Cesare Viola soon distinguished himself as theater critic for various newspapers and, from 1926 to 1931, he was managing editor of the newspaper New Anthology . He discovered his artistic passion and wrote over 30 comedies for theater, performed by the most important theater companies of the time. In the 1930s, he began collaborating with the world of cinema, writing some scripts.

He became famous in the 1940s for collaborating with Vittorio De Sica on the script of  I bambini ci guardano , inspired to one of his novels, Pricò . In 1946, still with De Sica and Zavattini, he wrote the script of Sciuscià , for which he was nominated for an Oscar for best original script in 1948.
