A painter, set designer and French draughtsman, Raoul Dufy was influenced by Boudin’s impressionism, he later sided with the Fauves, but his training was irregular, having had to begin work at the age of fourteen. In the incredibly stimulating artistic environment of Paris in those years he approached two elderly Impressionist patriarchs such as Monet and Pissarro, but finally in 1905 the Fauves scandal revealed him a modern and congenial painting, especially in Matisse. From then on, his elegantly decorative theme, almost rabescata, was successfully established in a very wide production, from painting to graphics, from ceramics to textiles, from illustrations to scenography.
