Giovanni Maria Mataloni (Rome, 1869 - 1944)
We know little about the life of the Italian publicist and illustrator Giovanni Maria Mataloni . Even on his name there are some discrepancies: some sources report Giovanni Mario Mataloni, others Giovanni Maria Mataloni.
We certainly know that his paternal family owned several paper mills in the area of Pioraco, in the province of Macerata. Mataloni is an exponent of the Liberty style and, together with Leonetto Cappiello, Adolf Hohenstein, Leopoldo Metlicovitz, and Marcello Dudovich, he is considered one of the fathers of modern Italian poster art . His first manifesto is dated 1891. He has collaborated with Ricordi, De Agostini, the editions of Dr. Chappuis of Bologna, the publisher Bocca di Torino, L'Illustrazione Italiana and the Cromolitographic Establishment Alessandro Marzi in Rome. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and among his students there was Umberto Boccioni.
