Maurice Denis (Grandville, 1870 – Paris, 1943), French painter, decorative artist and writer, Maurice Denis was a very important figure in the transitional period between Impressionism and modern art.

Maurice Denis (Grandville, 1870 – Paris, 1943), French painter, decorative artist and writer, Maurice Denis was a very important figure in the transitional period between Impressionism and modern art. He was one of the founders and the theoretical spokesman of the French Nabis group , then of the Symbolist movement, but then demonstrated a return to n eo-classicism . His theories contributed to the founding Cubism, Fauvism, and Abstract art . After World War I, the artist founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré , which envisaged decorating the interior spaces of churches, fostering the revival of religious art.
