The artwork represents a Surrealist composition typical of Bellmer's style: the artist is known for his project on mutated body forms of dolls and their unusual poses. Here, a "disarticulation" on the background of a room is represented. Bellmer believed indeed art could stimulate desire in the viewer, and he played with his objects to explore how an artificial figure of a girl could create authentic passion, desire, or fantasy.
Hans Bellmer (13 March 1902 - 24 February 1975) was a German artist, well-known for the life-size pubescent female dolls he produced from the mid-1930s. He developed the Surrealist theme of mannequins and dolls as metaphors of sexuality with a singularly obsessive focus.
