Historical background:
The general Oudinet who was sent by Louis Napoleon, the president of the Second French Republic, tried to assault Rome for the second time, France won. The French Army marched and got in Rome, established a temporary military government.
Signed on plate, “Raffet San Donato Février 1858”. Title “Artilleurs allant prendre service des Batteries n. 1 e n.2, Siège de Rome, 5 juin 1849” was printed at the centre. “Paris,Gihant, Boulevard des Italiens, 9” in the lower left margin, “Imp. par Auguste Bry, rue de Bac, 114 Paris.” in the lower right margin. Interesting Lithograph of the French old master, Auguste Raffet, describes the march of French Artillery during the Siège of Rome (3 rd June-2 nd July 1849). The artist assisted and became the illustrator of the Italian campaigns.
Denis Auguste Marie Raffet (1804 – 1860) was a French old master who specialized in lithograph, inspired by his patriotism: he was the official illustrator of the Napoleonic campaigns, from Egypt to Waterloo.

Interessante Litografia del maestro francese Auguste Raffet che illustra la marcia dell’artiglieria francese in procinto di prendere il servizio di batteria durante l’assedio di Roma (dal 3 giugno al 2 luglio 1849). L'artista assistette a questo avvenimento e divenne il narratore delle Campagne d’Italia.
Denis Auguste Marie Raffet (1804 – 1860),maestro francese specializzato in litografie dal gusto epico: illustrò le campagne napoleoniche da waterloo alla Campagna d’Egitto con acceso fervore patriottico.
Contesto storico:
Quando il generale Oudinot, inviato dal presidente della Seconda Repubblica francese, Luigi Napoleone, tentò per la seconda volta l'assalto a Roma, ebbe la meglio e vinse. Così i francesi entrarono a Roma e insediarono un governo militare temporaneo in attesa del ritorno di papa Pio IX.
