Habits et Maisons des Floridiens is a beautiful black and white etching (engraving on copper) on wire rod paper realized by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), from volume 14 by the monk Prevos " Histoire générale des voyages, ou, Nouvelle collection de toutes les relations de voyages par mer et par terre ".
Title on plate on the higher margin at the center, inscription on plate on the lower margin: " Tom XIV/ N. IV ".
In very good conditions, except for some stains on the higher margin and a usual yellowing of the paper on the edges; some visibile little stains appear on the lower margin too.

This is an original print representing an interesting and folkloristic view of an early settlement in Florida, full of palm trees and with some settlers in the foreground near pilings.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772)
One of the most important map-makers of the eighteenth century, the name Jacques-Nicolas Bellin is still today synonymous of top-notch French carthography. His old maps gained fame and recognition all over Europe, and were published many times throughout the 18th century and successively.
In 1721, when he was 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) for the French Navy. In August 1741, he was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. During this period, he also produced a large number of sea-atlases of the world. He contributed with high-definition maps to the 15-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages by Antoine François Prévost.
