The artwork represents a typical Carnival party set in a luxurious dance hall during  Fat Thursday , the traditional Christian feast marking the last Thursday before Lent, associated with the celebration of the Carnival.

Ernest Florian (Chez-le-Bart, 1863 - Paris, 1914) was the pupil of his brother Frederic Florian. He was awarded an honourable mention in 1890 and a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900.
