The Italian semiotician, philosopher and writer, Umberco Eco (Alessandria, 1932- Milan, 2016) wrote: «Chi non legge, a 70 anni avrà vissuto una sola vita: la propria. Chi legge avrà vissuto 5000 anni: c'era quando Caino uccise Abele, quando Renzo sposò Lucia, quando Leopardi ammirava l'infinito. Perché la lettura è un'immortalità all'indietro» is one of Umberto Eco's most remembered quotes. (“ At the age of 70, those who don’t read will have led only one life: their own! Those who read will have lived 5000 lives: they were there when Cain killed Abel, when Renzo married Lucia and when Leopardi admired the infinite… because literature is backwards immortality ”)

Intellectual valued around the world, 40 honorary degrees between European and American Universities, Eco wrote very polific essays on semiotics, medieval aesthetics, linguistics and philosophy, as well as successful novels. His first novel, the name of the rose, encountered a great success in 1980 and became an international best-seller, translated into 47 languages. It was sold thirty million copies of the book, which was also finalist of the prestigious Edgar Award in 1984. The correlation between dictatorship and mass culture, between fascism and the mass media was central in his study: "eternal fascism " or " Ur-fascism ", "quality television and Internet populism" and according to Umberto Eco, it is possible to " unmask " the forms of fascism that have always been reproduced" in every part of the world.
