Edmond Henri Zeiger de BAUGY (1895 to1994), also known as ZEIGER-VIALLET or as Edmond Henry ZEIGER of BAUGY. ZEIGER later changed his name to ZEIGER-VIALLET by adding the name of his spouse. He was a painter, designer and architect, had a personal preference for painting in oils in a classic style. In his later years, however, his work substantially changed as the result of a chance friendship with much younger fellow artist Jean-Michel Folon. The Zeiger watercolors we offer for sale in our eBay store are from this period. There is some uncertainty about the year of his death. Official art references disagree, variously stating the year of his death as 1986 or 1994. Prolific and much commissioned, the artist was in much demand during his lifetime. He was never forced to compromise by mass producing works solely for public sale.
Edmond Henry ZEIGER of BAUGY originally studied art, architecture and letters. He eventually chose to devote himself exclusively to painting. He studied at l'Académie de Vevey and l'École des Beaux-arts in Geneva, Switzerland. He worked and exhibited in Rome in 1919-1920 and in Paris as early as 1921.
He was the primary collaborator with Emmanuel BÉNÉZIT (1854-1920) and his wife. On the first edition of the BENEZIT dictionary of artists, the definitive reference for the art world. Edmond Henry ZEIGER of BAUGY is thus an artist reference in Benezit ( le Bénézit ). Additional publications by him include an important scholarly study and retrospective.
