Ponte di Mammea (today Ponte Mammolo)

The original artwork Ponte Mammea oggi Ponte Mammolo is an etching on copper, drawn and engraved by the artist Antonio Acquaroni (signed Aquaroni ), for the print series Ponti antichi sul Tevere e sull'Aniene, published in 1836.

The artist worked for the National Chalcography and was a skilled chalcographer, trustworthy in the documentation of the represented places.

The engraving is numbered on the higher right “89” and is titled on the lower center, both writings are inside the matrix. On the same line, on the left, the print is signed “ A. Aquaroni dis. ”, whilst “ incise ” is inscribed on the left. The state of preservation is good, except for small fungal foxing on the higher left corner of the matrix, and spread on the yellowed paper. On the lower right, the margin has a small fold of the paper. On the left, near the edge, there is a tiny pin puncture.

The artwork is a pleasant view of the Roman countryside and of the Ponte Mammolo , the ancient bridge “ Ponte Mammea ” of the Roman epoch, here represented during the 15 th -century reconstruction before its destruction in 1849 undertaken by the French and its successive reconstruction. For the delicacy and precision of the hatching, as well as for the pleasantness of the tale and the view, this original print takes on the value of historical and folkloric document.
