Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is the dominant figure of Fauvism. Those who know Henri Matisse through his sumptuous, intensely colored canvases might be surprised to learn that he was also a dedicated printmaker. The artst sustained that colour could play a principal role in conveying meaning and focused his efforts on demonstrating this idea, exploring the effects that various colors have on emotions.

Those who know Henri Matisse through his sumptuous, intensely colored canvases might be surprised to learn that he was also a dedicated printmaker. Matisse is recognized as one of the greatest printmakers of the 20 th century, and worked with several methods. The artist began working with lithography as early as 1906 and used it to create sceneries in rich details and textures. He made also etchings, aquatints, drypoints, pochoires, linocuts, woodcuts and monotypes.
