Mark Kostabi (Los Angeles, November 27, 1960) is an American painter and composer. Mark Kostabi was born into a family of Estonian immigrants in California, where he will spend the first years of his life, in the town of Whittier. He studies drawing and
painting at California State University. In 1982 he moved to New York and from 1984 he became an important figure of reference within the artistic movement of the East Village. During these years he enjoys the provocative use of mass media with
self-interviews with a contemporary art theme. Since 1987 he has gained international recognition and his works are requested by galleries in Japan, the United States, Australia and Germany. In 1988 he founded "Kostabi World": his studio, gallery, office in
New York. This structure, thanks to the many assistants, produces about 1000 paintings a year, all of which are signed by the master. Since 1996 he has divided his life between New York and Rome where he becomes a model for many Italian artists.
In his paintings there are real constants, such as the citation of other works and the depiction of faceless subjects that recall the figures of De Chirico's mannequins.
In recent years he has devoted himself to the design of advertising brands including Swatch watches, espresso cups, computer accessories and recently [unclear] has recreated the pink jersey of the Giro d'Italia. He has collaborated pictorially with Enzo Cucchi,
Arman, Howard Finster (in 1992), Tadanori Yokoo (in 1993) and Enrico Baj (in 1992). He has granted interviews to CNN and the MTV channel as well as numerous magazines and weeklies, such as New York Times, People, Vogue, Playboy, Forbes, New York
Magazine, Domus, Artforum, Art in America, Artnews Arts, Flash Art, Tema Celeste , including an interview on Radio Uno New York with Italian presenter Tino Maiolo.
