Étienne Jacques Joseph Alexandre Macdonald (1765 –1840) was a French general, Marshal of the Empire and Duke of Taranto.
Sincerely a republican, he distinguished himself in the French revolutionary wars, fighting with valor and skill, in the Netherlands, on the Rhine and in Italy; set aside by Napoleon Bonaparte for his opposition to the dictatorship, he was recalled by the emperor in
1809 and, appointed marshal for having contributed in a decisive way to the victory of Wagram, he participated with an important role in the last campaigns of the Napoleonic wars.
