Jean-Ferdinand Chaigneau (6 March 1830 - 23 October 1906) was a French painter of the Barbizon School. Chaigneau later abandoned historical painting to move on to landscape and animal subjects and the composition of scenes from life in the fields. He contributed to the 1885 Paris World’s Fair by exhibiting a canvas entitled Marais dans les Landes. He continued to participate regularly in the Salon, first with landscapes of the Gironde Estuary and Landes, his homeland, then, starting in 1860, with paintings inspired by views of the Forest of Fontainebleau. He also became, together with Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, one of the pioneers of the Barbizon School.
