The Carter was presented in 1879 at the XXXVIII Exhibition of the Society of Fine Arts in Turin and it was very appreciated by the critics.
In this sculpture, Achille D'Orsi showed through the portray of a carter the hardness and the misery of working in the fields.
Achille D'Orsi (1845-1929) was an Italian sculptor from Naples. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples with Tito Angelini and Tommaso Solari. After a period of formation in Rome he returned to Naples in 1876 and realized the statue of «Salvaror Rosa» then donated to the Neapolitan Institute of Fine Arts.
Knight of the Crown of Italy, professor at the Academies of Milan, Genoa and Naples, later he became honorary president of the Neapolitan Academy.
