Constantin Guys ( Flessinga,1805 - Parigi, 1892 ): Constantin Guys is considered the painter of modern life. In 1863 Baudelaire wrote about Constantin Guys, a French draftsman and painter born in Flushing in 1805. The charm of modernity captures him and with a quick and conscious stroke transports us to a world of fluttering little women, crowded bistros, horse races and inhabited theater boxes. by procacious ladies courted by dandies fully dressed, all seasoned with a painstaking attention to detail, fashion and aesthetics of that era. In this series of essays, testimony to the intense activity of critic and essayist, Charles Baudelaire tells us about a self-taught man who arrives in the world of painting. He studies Goya and Delacroix and is not afraid of the label of anti-academic. He bases his paintings on subjects captured, in quick studies, live. Just like Eduard Manet, Constantin, in fact, wanders like a perfect Parisian flaneur in search of the sublime and the marvelous hidden in everyday life. He immerses himself in the metropolis, thus becoming an attentive and analytical connoisseur of the urban fabric.
