The Holy Family with Putti and the Fall of Adonis (also known as Allegory of the Flight into Egypt)

Etching on laid paper, realzed by Paulus Pontius (1603-1658) after Jacques Jordaens (1593-1678).

A powerful and finely executed Baroque engraving by Paulus Pontius after a composition by Jacques Jordaens, one of the leading masters of the Flemish school. The present work exemplifies Pontius’ mastery as one of the foremost reproductive engravers associated with the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens and his circle in Antwerp.

The composition presents a richly allegorical scene combining sacred and mythological elements. At left, the Virgin Mary tenderly holds the Christ Child while seated upon a donkey, accompanied by Saint Joseph, who guides the animal. The Holy Family is set within a luxuriant, wooded landscape animated by dramatic foliage and atmospheric sky.

At right, a sculptural figure of Adonis poised upon a pedestal recalls classical antiquity. Below, playful putti interact beside a gnarled tree, reinforcing the allegorical dimension of the composition. Latin inscriptions along the lower margin further articulate the theological symbolism, contrasting Christian salvation with pagan mythology.

Pontius’ engraving is remarkable for its tonal richness and painterly translation of Jordaens’ dynamic brushwork into the linear language of burin engraving. The modeling of drapery, musculature, and foliage demonstrates the engraver’s exceptional command of cross-hatching and graduated shading, achieving depth and luminosity characteristic of Flemish Baroque printmaking.

Printed on laid paper, likely from a 17th-century edition, with engraved inscriptions naming the painter and engraver (“I. Jordaens pinxit”; “P. Pontius sculpsit”). Margins appear narrow and the sheet is framed with a later gilt edge.

Condition: Visible signs of age including light toning, minor creasing, and handling wear; overall impression remains strong and well-inked. Not examined out of frame.

An important example of Flemish Baroque reproductive engraving, reflecting the collaborative artistic culture of 17th-century Antwerp and appealing to collectors of Old Master prints and followers of Rubens and Jordaens.
