Open Bookshelf / Side Cabinet
Elegant open bookshelf produced by Anonima Castelli, Bologna, circa late 1930s–early 1940s. A fine example of Italian rationalist–era furniture, the piece combines functionality and understated decorative refinement.
The bookshelf is constructed in warmly toned walnut veneer, with a rectilinear yet softened profile defined by subtly rounded vertical edges and a gently moulded top frame. The two open compartments, divided by a central fixed shelf, provide versatile storage while preserving a sense of lightness and symmetry.
The piece stands on a stepped, ebonized plinth base, giving it a grounded architectural presence typical of Castelli’s pre-war production. Attention to detail is evident in the continuous veneer grain, the elegant corner mouldings, and the refined proportions. The maker’s metal label “Anonima Castelli – Bologna” is affixed to the interior of the top frame.
Condition Report
Good vintage condition consistent with age and use. Surface shows small scratches, minor oxidation to brass trim, areas of light wear to edges and plinth, and a warm, even patina throughout. Structurally sound.
