This striking portrait of Chairman Mao is part of Warhol’s celebrated Mao series, created in 1972 in response to President Nixon’s historic visit to China. Drawing inspiration from the ubiquitous state-commissioned portrait of Mao Zedong, Warhol transforms the image with his bold Pop Art vocabulary, layering vivid color fields with graphic flourishes in crayon-like black strokes. The fusion of political iconography and consumerist aesthetics exemplifies Warhol’s ability to blur boundaries between propaganda, celebrity, and fine art.
Examples from this edition are held in major public collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate, London.
