Nobuyoshi Araki was born in Tokyo on May 25, 1940, receiving his first camera at the age of 12. In 1963 he graduated from Chiba University in photography and cinema and worked in the advertising field. He makes his photographic debut with the Satchin series, awarded at the Taiyo competition for young photographers. Among the most delicate themes examined by Araki stands out the ancient Japanese practice of erotic binding defined as Kinbaku-bi. The female figures immortalized by the artist express an eroticism poised between pleasure and suffering, offering the public a visual experience of strong impact. In 1971 he published the collection "Sentimental Journey", in which his personal life, in particular his marriage and honeymoon with his wife Yoko Aoki, are reported in diary form. Araki shoots in color and black and white, using natural light and also artificial flash light. He employs many experimental techniques including collage, photomontage, hand-applied color and works with negatives that are deliberately damaged. The urban areas of Tokyo are portrayed in the documentation "Tokyo lucky hole" created between 1983 and 1985 in the red light district of Shinjuku. Among the subjects favored by Araki, flowers appear insistently in the projects of the 90s, representing a fusion between eros and death.
