Odilon Redon (born Bertrand Redon (1840 -1916), was a French symbolist painter printmaker.
He is best known for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were inspired by japonese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
Redon described his work as ambiguous and undefinable: "My drawings inspire, and are not to be defined. They place us, as does music, in the ambiguous realm of the undetermined."
