Pleasant bucolic scene depicting shepherds surrounded by greenery. In the center of the composition, a shepherd boy caresses the female figure on his right. The shepherds are surrounded by grazing animals and are dressed in a simple and classical way. A verdant landscape and a clear sky in the background surround the scene. The composition is extremely simple but very effective and inspires a sense of peace and tranquility. During the first half of the 18th century, the period to which this canvas belongs, genre scenes were extremely widespread not only in Italy, but throughout Europe too.

The work has been realized by the German painter Johann Conrad Seekatz (Grunstadt, 1719 - Darmstadt, 1768). Seekatz painted social and military scenes, genre pictures from farming life and landscapes. Johann Conrad Seekatz was trained by his older brother Johann Ludwig Seekatz (1711–1783). He also painted and both took over an order to decorate the organ gallery in the Bergkirche Osthofen in 1747 which they carried out together. From 1753, Johann Conrad Seekatz worked as a court painter in Darmstadt. He also traveled to Frankfurt am Main with Goethe's father and painted his family. Some of these pictures are exhibited in the Goethe House in Frankfurt. His repertoire included small-format religious, mythological and historical images. Seekatz also painted realistic genre pictures from the bourgeois milieu and landscapes in the Dutch style.
