Maurice Utrillo

Maurice Utrillo

(Paris 1883 – Dax 1955)
French painter Maurice Utrillo was born in Paris in 1883.

Famous for his views of Paris, especially of the district of Montmartre, Utrillo from a very early age exhibited acute sensitivity and a complex character which, together with a somewhat unstable family background, caused him a number of psychological problems.

Introduced to painting by his mother, Maurice Utrillo was largely self-taught but his extraordinary talent was clear from his very first works. His artistic production, which he pursued with passion, was interspersed with alternate phases of creative joy and long spells in hospitals and alcoholics’ rehabilitation centres. Among his works in museums all over the world, the most famous include Street in Paris (1914), today with the Art Institute of Chicago, and The Roof of Montmagny, an oil-on-canvas painted between 1906 and 1907, and today part of the Centre Pompidou’s collection in Paris.
