The capture of Jaffa on March 7, 1799, and its violent sack by the French army, rapidly worsened due to the outbreak of an epidemic of bubonic plague which decimated the army commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte.
On March 11, Bonaparte paid a visit to the sick, touching their wounds in the style of thaumaturgic kings, a fact considered bordering on the miraculous which helped fuel the Napoleonic legend.
