François Bonvin (1817-1887) was a French painter, who joined the Realist movement of XIX Century. His earliest painting was a still life, a subject for which he would be recognized by contemporary critics and collectors as a leader in reviving and developing the genre. In 1859, he held a studio exhibition of the works of young artists who had been rejected by the Salon, including Legros, McNeill Whislter, Ribot. Bonvin's rendering of light and colour situated him as a precursor of the Impressionists.
