Victorious Samson

Victorious Samson  is an original modern artwork realized in Italy in the 1950s by Luchino Visconti (Milan, 1906 - Rome, 1976).

Original oil on canvas. Dimensions: 50 x 40 cm. Original XIX Century gilded and lacquered frame. Good conditions.

The artwork is a replica of the oil painting Samson by Antonio Zanchi  (Este 1631–1722 Venice).

Samson is a hero of prodigious strength, granted directly by God. His exploits are extraordinary, but they are only a step towards liberation from the Philistines. It is not excluded that originally it could have been a semi-divine mythical figure, given that his name is connected with the Sun. This thesis, very widespread in the nineteenth century, now meets less academic approval than in the past. 

The work has been realized by the Italian artist Luchino Visconti  (Milan, 1906 - Rome, 1976). In the early Parisian years, Visconti frequented Picasso, Braque, Salvador Dalí. The whole subsequent career as a director will be marked by the evident and profound link with the visual arts.
