Luigi Calamatta (Civitavecchia, 21 June 1801 - Milan, 8 March 1869) was an Italian engraver. Nephew and son a port engineer, it was his mother, coming from a family of impoverished bankers, who passed on to him the passion of the Fine Arts. Orphaned as a child, he was educated and enrolled by his uncle in the school of arts in the San Michele Hospice in Rome. where he learned to draw; Ricciani played a fundamental role among his masters who also dissuaded him from the idea of becoming a priest. Due to his own indiscipline, he was expelled from the college in 1820. Calamatta's best known work is the burin taken from the Mona Lisa, which received the gold medal in 1855 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Some of his famous works, executed during his Italian stays, are the engravings of Beatrice Cenci by Guido Reni and the Madonna della Seggiola by Raphael; France had a copy of the Madonna della Seggiola, which it returned to Kingdom Italy in 1863.
