Japanese Pilgrims  is a wonderful colored xylograph on paper realized by the talented Japanese artist  Utagawa Yoshitora  in the mid-XIX century (active in 1836-1887).

This original print represents an  imaginary map of the world of good and evil : there are roads that lead to places called as generosity, honesty, inconvenience. To complete the work there are the short poems called "Haiku" and "Senryu" added by the artist  Fuen Gengyo , well-known at the time as a draftsman and calligrapher, often called to co-complete the ukiyo-e works.

In excellent conditions, except for the usual yellowing of the paper, including a red wooden frame, this modern artwork could give to your furniture a sophisticated touch!

Japanese Pilgrims  is a wonderful colored xylograph on paper realized by the talented Japanese artist  Utagawa Yoshitora  in the mid-XIX century.

This original print represents a sort of religious procession of pilgrims crossing the mountainous paths of Japan.  Indeed it deals with an imaginary map of the world of good and evil : there are roads that lead to places called as generosity, honesty, inconvenience. To complete the work there are the short poems called "Haiku" and "Senryu" added by the artist Fuen Gengyo , well-known at the time as a draftsman and calligrapher, often called to co-complete the ukiyo-e works.

Utagawa Yoshitora , active in 1836-1887,

Born Nagashima , Utagawa Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa  Kuniyoshi who only worked between 1840 and the early 1870s. He preferred to represent historical incidents and legends. Like all woodblock artists from the 19th century, he created his own versions of some of the older known series, but his work is unique and personal in the style, developing his artistic language. Still Today Utagawa Yoshitora is remembered as one of the best Eshi painter during the Edo period.
