Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, Sicily, 1911 – Rome, 1987) wrote this postcard from his native Sicilian town, Bagheria, perhaps he was on holiday.  In 1936, the same year of this postcard, the talented artist had to leave for military service in Milan, where he had the opportunity to meet Manzù, Birolli, Fontana, Antonio Banfi. In this fervid environment, his social art took shape from a moral and political engagement more and more evident in artworks like “Fucilazione in Campagna ” 1937, “Fuga dall’Etna”, “Vucciria” , finally consecrated in the maximum expression of  Social Realism  like in “La Spiaggia ” (1955) and “ Carretti in Bagheria” (1956). One year after this postcard, he moved to Rome where he got closer to artists like Birolli, Fontana and Persico.
