This wonderful modern artwork, representing a portrait of a woman with a big hat and her hair blowing in the wind, was made with incredible modulations of lines and blacks. It feels like being with her in the countryside, enjoying the fresh wind and the warm sun. It is evident that we are looking at an artwork by a German painter, born in the Black Forest with an innate love for Nature.

Hans Thoma (Bernau, 1839 – Karlsruhe, 1924) entered in 1859 the Karlsruhe academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Ludwig des Coudres. He  moved to Düsseldorf, Paris, Italy, Munich, and Frankfurt, until his reputation became firmly established with a solo exhibition of his paintings in Munich. He was influenced by early German masters like Albrecht Altdorfer and Lucas Cranach the Elder. He surely has affinities with the Pre-Raphaelites painters. Thoma also produced various lithographs and pen drawings, but he is especially remembered for his decorative mural paintings in a café at Frankfurt.
