A number of symbolist drawings done by Fornara in 1902 are known, including: Lacasa delpoeta (The poet's house), Sogno diunanotte di primavera (A spring night's dream) and Laformica (The ant), (M. Valsecchi-F. Vercelotti, Fornara, Milan 1971, pp. 25, 57, 58).

Annie-Paule Quinsac, who added Studio per l’aquilone (Study for the kite) to these, observed that, not being an “impromptu” painter, Fornara continuously elaborated his paintings on the basis o his own drawings (Carlo Fornara. Graphic works, Valle Vigezzo, Comune di Santa Maria Maggiore, 5 August-15 October 1995, pp. 7,72, n.76, repr.). In that context, the year 1902 was perhaps particularly fruitful: in his biographical notes, the artist himself recorded that this was the year when he exhibited 25 works, including a great number of drawings at the show he shared with of Emilio Gola at the Society of Fine Arts’ Permanent Exhibition in Milan (Valsecchi-Vercelotti, 1971, p. 35). In 1902, Fornara also exhibited a triptych in oils at the First Quadriennial in Turin. This work, entitled "La parabola dellavita" (The parable of life) (Death, Newlife andThe omen), while having no direct figurative affinity with the drawing shown here, stems from the same symbolist culture.
