Hans Bellmer was a German artist, who, when his works were declared "degenerate" by the Nazi Party in 1938, was forced to flee Germany to France. In France, Bellmer's works were welcomed by the Surrealists around André Breton.
Hans Bellmer developed the Surrealist theme of mannequins and dolls as metaphors of sexuality with a singularly obsessive focus.
