This artwork represents Saint Jerome, the first official translator of the Bible. In 352 AD, he reviewed the translation of the Gospels, and later in 390 AD he translated the Old Testament in Hebrew; he finished after 23 years.
The scene of the translation of the Bible, in which he is represented as the bearer of the divine message, has been represented in several other artworks.
