The Suite was realized to illustrate the German translation of Jean Giraudoux's Judith theatrical play, in three acts, written in 1931 and performed in the same year at the Théâtre Pigalle in a staging by Louis Jouvet. The illustrations were created on the occasion of the performance of "Judith" at the Odéon Theater in 1961, in a staging by Jean-Louis Barrault. In those circumstances, the sets were designed by Max Ernst and the costumes were created by Dorothea Tanning.
