René Magritte (after) The Belgian painter René Magritte (1898-1967) met the work of Giorgio de Chirico in 1922. The Italian artist’s unsettling combinations of subjects rendered in a realistic way deeply impressed the younger Belgian artist, who created his first Surrealist artwork in 1926. The following year Magritte moved to Paris, where he joined the intellectual circle of André Breton and lived in France until 1930. In 1929, Magritte published a key essay in the Surrealist journal La revolution surréaliste, in which he examined the disconnection between objects, pictures of objects, and names of objects and pictures.
